OPRA eligibility & the registration pathway

Who this pathway applies to

The Knowledge Stream skills assessment — the pathway the OPRA exam belongs to — applies if you completed your pharmacy qualification in a country other than Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom or the United States.

If your qualification is from one of those six countries, a different APC pathway applies to you and this one does not. That single criterion is the one most often misread, so check it before spending anything.

The qualification requirement

Your qualification must incorporate the knowledge of pharmacy and the pharmaceutical sciences that forms the foundation of the pathway to general registration in Australia, and it must be equivalent to either:

• 4 years of full-time academic study, if you completed it after 1 January 2006, or
• 3 years of full-time academic study, if you completed it before 1 January 2006

Evidence of registration is not required

You do not need to be registered as a pharmacist anywhere to apply. Evidence of registration is an optional upload in APC's document list, and an application without it is still complete — a common reason candidates delay applying unnecessarily.

You also do not need your documents certified, and APC does not require proof of English competency at this step.

The two parts of the skills assessment

Requesting a Skills Assessment Outcome has two parts: passing the eligibility check, then passing the OPRA exam. You cannot register for the exam until the eligibility check has passed.

The eligibility check has no expiry once passed, so there is no risk in doing it early — and good reason to, because you cannot book a sitting without it.

Documents you will need

Every document is uploaded through the APC Candidate Portal — never emailed or posted. Non-English documents need a full translation (not an extract) by a NAATI-accredited translator, and you submit both the original and the translation.

• Passport — uncropped, including top and bottom pages
• An official photo-bearing identity document issued by a government authority
• Birth certificate, or a second photo-bearing document in its place
• Pharmacy qualification certificate, or a letter of completion if it has not been issued yet
• Academic transcript — all pages, every subject and result for every semester
• Optional: evidence of registration, agent authorisation form, evidence of name change

Costs and timing

APC charges for each step separately, so the total is larger than the exam fee alone. Fees are set by APC and can change — confirm the current figures on the APC site before budgeting.

Plan around the registration close, not the exam

APC aims to process eligibility applications within 5 working days of receiving complete documentation, but asks you to allow up to 4 weeks for the unforeseen — and to lodge your application at least 8 weeks before the registration closing date for the sitting you want.

Watch for scams

APC warns candidates directly about this: the only way to apply for an eligibility check or book an exam is through the APC Candidate Portal. Do not send personal documents or payments for APC services anywhere else. If you use a migration agent, check they are registered with OMARA.
